What is an Electric Water Heater

Electric water heater

An electric water heater is an appliance that utilizes electricity to heat water. Electric water heaters can be used for both residential and commercial purposes. The water is stored in a tank, typically a metal tank with a glass liner. The temperature of the water can be set by thermostats mounted to the tank near the elements. When hot water is needed, it is drawn from the top of the tank and replenished with cold water to the bottom by means of a diptube. The cold water is then heated by the electric heating elements located inside the tank. Electric water heaters are a common alternative to gas-fired water heaters, and are typically less expensive to install but may have higher operating costs due to the cost of electricity.

Electric water heaters typically last 8-12 years before requiring replacement. However, most manufacturers offer a 6 or 8 year warranty. This is important as some insurance companies will not cover you if you water heater causes any damage to your home or property if it’s out of warranty.
